Grottaglie in Puglia has been home to a flourishing artisan ceramics production for centuries and is known worldwide for it. The tradition is closely linked to the abundance of clay in the region. Each piece is moulded by hand on a lathe and then naturally air-dried so that the residual water in the clay slowly evaporates - only then are the pieces fired, hand-painted and glazed. The patterns vary from piece to piece and are reminiscent of the joyful Mediterranean way of life every time they are used.
